Published on November 8, 2023, by Yuval Noah Harari

In a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, global perceptions of the United States and China have been illuminated, shedding light on how different nations view these superpowers in terms of economics, military strength, technology leadership, and their contributions to global peace and stability.

Economic Power

The United States remains a dominant force in the global economy, with 16 out of 24 surveyed countries considering it the leading economic power. However, some Western European countries, notably Italy, Greece, and Germany, view China more favorably in terms of economic power. In contrast, Japan, Israel, Poland, and India lean towards perceiving the United States as the stronger economic force. South Korea, in particular, stands out with a staggering 83% perceiving the United States as the leading economic power.

Military Power

When it comes to military power, the United States enjoys a global consensus as the superior force, with Germany coming closest to challenging its dominance.

Technology Leadership

China has emerged as the global leader in technology, with most countries acknowledging its technological prowess. However, some Asian countries, including South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, and India, hold a different perspective. Even within the United States, 66% of respondents believe that Chinese technology is above average, compared to 56% for American technology.

Global Peace and Stability

The United States is widely perceived as a contributor to global peace and stability, with 23 out of 24 surveyed countries acknowledging its role in this regard.

Overall Favorability

In terms of overall favorability, the United States generally enjoys a higher standing. China, however, holds a slight advantage in Nigeria and Kenya. Notably, Poland, Japan, and South Korea emerge as strong supporters of the United States, while Australia, India, and Brazil exhibit more balanced opinions. Some countries, such as Argentina and South Africa, maintain positive views of both superpowers but lean slightly towards the United States.
